WILLOW RIVER- It was a 14 run first inning Tuesday afternoon, and a perfect game by Rebel pitcher Samantha Johnson which propelled the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels to a 19-0 victory over the Cromwell Cardinals in this Polar League conference contest Tuesday at Willow River.


The 14 first inning runs set the tone for the Rebels as they picked up a much need victory after starting 1-4 on the season. In the first inning Tuesday, the Rebels sent 20 batters to the plate and picked up seven hits in the inning as the jumped out fast.


The Rebels were aided by seven pass balls and four wild pitches in the inning, Samantha Johnson had two hits and drove in three runs in the inning. Olivia Bennett also had two hits and two runs batted in for the Rebels in the first inning.


Jodi Michalski singled in Samantha Johnson in the second inning as the Rebels made it 15-0 after two innings of play. Moose Lake-Willow River added three more runs in the third inning as Johnson, Andrea Youngberg, and Marissa Milczark all had RBI’s in the inning.


Hannah Cervenka singled in Olivia Bennett in the fourth inning to round out the Rebels scoring as they finished with the 19 run victory. Every starter for the Rebels scored at least one run in this Polar League conference win.


Johnson had a commanding day on the mound for the Rebels as she pitches the perfect game for Moose Lake-Willow River who won their second game of the season, which was the first win in conference play this season.


Kaylan Risacher was the losing pitcher for the Cardinals, she pitched a good game for Cromwell, but the youth and inexperience on Cromwell’s side played a big role in the loss Tuesday.


Risacher struck out five Rebel batters in the game. She struck out four in the first inning alone, but two strikeouts went for naught as two batters reached on passed balls.


The Cardinals, with the loss fall to 0-4 on the season and they will be in action again on Thursday when they host Cook County in a conference match-up. This game is a make-up game originally scheduled for April 16th.


The Rebels improve to 2-4 on the season and they will be in action again on Thursday when the travel to Floodwood to take on the Polar Bears in a conference match-up. The Rebels will be back home Friday to take on East Central in a non-conference game.
