Thunder Softball Sweeps Vermilion

The Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Thunder Softball team hosted a doubleheader at Braun Park vs. Vermilion Community College on Thursday, April 5. The Thunder swept both games, winning 5-1 in the first game and 17-10 in the second game.


In the opening game, Thunder pitcher Katie Youngberg (Moose Lake-Willow River) tossed a complete game two-hitter to earn the win. Youngberg, a sophomore, had 11 strikeouts to lead the solid pitching and defensive effort by the Thunder. The game was tied 1-1 in the 6th inning when the Thunder scored four runs to take the lead and then held off Vermilion in the final inning for the win.


In the second game, Thunder freshman outfielder April Broneak (Carlton) sparked the Thunder hitting with a well-timed three-run triple and a two-run single for five RBIs total. Thunder freshman shortstop Savannah Hanson (Esko) collected three hits in the game and was 5-for-6 total on the day. Sophomore Kassi Neary (Hill City) earned the pitching victory for the Thunder and freshman Denise Rodd (Cloquet) picked up the save as she entered the game with the Thunder leading 11-10 with the bases loaded for Vermilion and pitched shutout ball the rest of the way.


The Thunder improve to 3-7 overall for the season and are 2-2 in MCAC Northern Division games.


Scheduling notes: Today’s games were originally scheduled for Friday, April 6, but were moved up one day. The Thunder games vs. Northland Community College originally scheduled for Saturday, April 7, have been moved to next Monday, April 9, with 3:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m. starts at Braun Park.
