For as long as most people can remember Barnum Girls basketball has had one name associated with its program and that has been the one name of Randy Myhre. Myhre, who has been with the program for over 30 years is seeing all the time and effort he puts in come to an end as he has decided to retire from coaching the Barnum Girl’s Basketball team.

Myhre who had hinted for the past few seasons that he may be done coaching when his youngest daughter Katie finished her high school career made it official on Tuesday as he retired as the girls head basketball coach. Myhre started as the Head Coach back in 1978 saw his teams win 626 wins overall which makes him the third winingest girl’s basketball coach in Minnesota girls basketball history.

Randy Myhre told Northland Sports online recently that, “It’s been a wonderful ride here in Barnum.” “Being able to coach some suburb athletes as well as some just great girls, who were not only athletes, but many were great students as well.” Myhre added “Being a coach to my three daughters was also very special and something I will never forget.”

Myhre led his Lady Bombers to the girls state basketball tournament eight times in his 33 years as the head coach. All eight of those state appearances have come in the last 16 years. In those eight state appearances there was his state title back in 2010, a state runner up finish in 2008, and two third places finishes in 2009, and again in 2006.

Myhre also has the distinction of coaching seven state softball teams throughout his career as well; two of those seven state tournament teams finished as state runners up. Back in 1994 and again in 2010 the Myhre led Bombers were Class A state second place finishers in the girls state softball tournament.

With all of the success he has had coaching during his career he has been always quick to acknowledge that most of his success would not have been possible without the support of his wife Julie. Myhre told NSO that “I would have never been able to reach this plateau without a wonderful wife that let me do what I needed to do.”

Myhre, who has dedicated himself over the years to the basketball and softball programs, has seen the success come from the ground up and also through parent and community support. “Without the parent’s support that allow the kids to participate in these activities; we would never have had the success we did.” Myhre told NSO.

His support from parents and the community comes also from his desire to be the best coach possible. His assistant coach this season Keith Turner, who has coached for many years and is currently the head coach of the FDLTCC football team told Northland Sports Online, “I learned a lot from coach Myhre this season but what I came to appreciate the most was his drive and passion for the game.”

Northland Sports Online would like to congratulate coach Myhre on all of the success he has had throughout his career, and also thank him for all the time and effort and dedication to make his players not only better athletes, but better people, and again as coach Myhre stated “It’s been a heck of ride!”
