Barnum Girls Open Playoffs With Huge Win

The Lady Bombers opened the Section 7A playoffs with a huge win Thursday night over Polar League rival Wrenshall by a score of 79-30. The Bombers, who are playing in Section 7A basketball for the first time in four years, saw themselves jump out fast and never look back.


The Bombers who were facing the Wrens, who opened the Section 7A playoffs on Tuesday night with a 60-43 victory over the Silver Bay Mariners at Silver Bay High School in the opening round of the Section 7A playoffs.


The Bombers used a balanced scoring attack; Daron Mainville returned to action to lead all scorers with 24 points on the night as Barnum worked the ball down low to re-establish a inside presence they hadn’t had for several games.


Barnum rolled to a halftime lead of 53-16, and continued to add to their lead in the second half. The Barnum finished with the 49 point win at Proctor High School as they now advance to the section quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.


The Bombers were led by Mainville, who finished with 24 points, Claire Rodgers connected with 23, Katie Myhre chipped in with 16, Claudia Turner had 9, Megan Nelson added 3, and Lissa Warpula and Caitlyn Rodgers both finished with 2.


Maria Burcar led the Wrens with 18 points on the night. Natalie Peaney finished with 7 points, Kaitlyn Kelley added 4 points, and it was Brittany O’Brien who ended the Wrenshall scoring Thursday night as she finished with 1 point.

The Bombers improve to 22-5 on the season and they move on to the section quarterfinals on Saturday where they will face South Ridge. The Panthers defeated Floodwood by a score of 51-38 on Thursday, also at Proctor High School.


The winner of the South Ridge and Barnum match-up will face the winner of North Woods and Mesabi East who meet Saturday at 1pm at Duluth Denfeld. Wrenshall finishes their season with a record of 4-20 on the season.
