CLOQUET- With Cloquet coming off a big win Tuesday night over Moose Lake-Willow River; the Lumberjacks were hoping to make it two consecutive wins of section 7AA opponents. It wasn’t to be however, as the Blue Devils shot down Cloquet by a score of 74-63.

The Lumberjacks jumped out to an early 13-5 lead and had things rolling their way. With a quick timeout by the Blue Devils, it was Virginia who stormed back and took the lead as Jordan Lindholm hit a bucket to put Virginia ahead by a 17-15 score.

Moments later Zach Peterson nailed a 3-pointer to give Cloquet a one point lead at 18-17. That lead would be the last Cloquet had on the night as Tyler Wilson hit his own 3-pointer and Virginia never trailed again in this contest.

Virginia and Cloquet battled the rest of the first half, and it was the Blue Devils who took a 35-30 lead into the locker room at half time. The second half started as Dillon Johnson buried a 3-pointer to cut the Virginia lead to two points; but that was as close as Cloquet would come the rest of the night.

The Jacks tried several times making small runs at the Blue Devils; but Virginia answered each and every time Cloquet made a run in the second half. Virginia also hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the non-conference win.

The Lumberjacks were led by Dillon Johnson who finished with 19 points on the night; including three long range bombs. Adam Laine added 18 points and Trent Moe finished with 10 points joining Johnson in double figures. Zach Peterson finished with 9 points for Cloquet, Erik Swanson added 3, and it was Sean Ferrell and Nate Weets both adding 2 points in the loss.

The Blue Devils were led by a pair of players, Tyler Wilson and Jordan Lindholm, who both finished with a game high 21 points on the night. Cade Stackpool added 14, Cole Skadsem and Patrick Jarvi each chipped in with 7, and it was Joe Geiselman rounding out the scoring with 4 points for Virginia.

The Lumberjacks fall to 7-11 on the season and they will be back in action on Thursday night at home against the Duluth Denfeld Hunters in a Lake Superior Conference match-up.

Virginia improves to 15-5 on the season and they are in action again on Thursday night when they will be on the road to take on the Proctor Rails at Proctor High School in this section battle.
