Several members of the Cloquet High School track team began their quest Wednesday for a trip to Hamline University to compete in the state track and field meet. The Lumberjacks began preliminary qualifying for Section 7AA competition on a bitterly cold day at Griggs Field located on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth. Several members of the boys and girls track team qualified to participate in the section finals, which are set for Saturday, May 30th back at Griggs Field.

The girls’ team qualified four members; seniors Jes Vork, Taylor Sautbine, and freshmen Caitlin Lilly and Amy Cambell all earned spots in Saturday’s finals. Vork will run in the 100m dash while Sautbine will compete in the 100 and 300m hurdles. Lilly will compete in the 100m hurdles and 400m dash while Freshman teammate Amy Cambell will run the 400m dash. Vork and Sautbine have both been to the state track and field meet. Sautbine competed last year while Vork has competed at the state meet since 8th grade.

The boys’ team qualified seniors Simon Thill, Nolan Dokken, and junior RaRa Jones. Thill will compete in the 400m dash, Dokken qualified in the 300m hurdles, and Jones will run the 200m dash.

Even though day-one competition was mostly preliminary qualifying, the finals were held in the boys and girls 3200m run and selected boys and girls field events. The girls’ final events included the long jump, discus, and high jump, while the boys’ field event finals included the triple jump, pole vault, and shot put.

Senior Jes Vork was the lone Lumberjack to earn a trip to the state track meet Wednesday by finishing second in the high jump. The event featured a battle of two future Golden Gophers. Vork will compete for the University of Minnesota in soccer and Katie Loberg of Princeton, who won the event, will play for the Gopher women’s basketball team next year.

The Lumberjacks will return to UMD on Saturday to compete in the section finals with the remaining field events starting at 11:00 am and the running events getting under way at noon.
