Spencer Johnson and Corey Anderson had 27 and 21 points respectively and the Hermantown Hawks remained unbeaten and slipped by the Cloquet Lumberjacks in boys basketball 64-58 last night in Hermantown.

The Hawks started out slow, but then outscored Cloquet by three points in each half to take a six-point win. “We came out slow and Cloquet jumped to a 11-2 lead. We did battle back to get halftime lead but
Cloquet had a nice run to start the second half and we were down by 6 with 10:00 mins to go.” Explained Hermantown Head Coach Mike Pothast.

Hermantown led 28-25 at the half and then outscored the Jacks 36-33 in the second half.“We then amped up our press and defensive pressure and that got us going.
Spencer Johnson played his best 10 mins of the year and Corey Anderson was his usual athletic self and keyed our press and fast break” Pothast added.

Helping Hermantown to the win were; Kevin Folman with nine, it was five for Kole Zuidmulder and two for Justin Brendon.

Cloquet was led by Adam Laine with 20 points, while Zach Peterson had 13 and Dillon Johnson added 10 points for the Jacks. Also scoring for Cloquet were; Trent Moe with nine points, Sean Ferrell with four, and a pair of points by Nate Weets.

Cloquet had difficulty keeping the Hawks off the free throw line as the Hawks shot 22 free throws to 13 for Cloquet. Hermantown scored 13 from the charity stripe while the Jacks had just nine points from the line.

The Lumberjacks hit five 3-pointers in the game and Hermantown had only one long-range bomb for the game.

With the win the Hawks remain perfect at 6-0 which includes tight wins including a one point win on a last second shot at Esko and an overtime win over a very good Duluth Marshall Squad. Hermantown will be off for the Christmas break, and then be back in action on the Dec 28 and 29 when they compete in the Princeton Tournament.

Cloquet falls to 1-3 on the season and will be back on the hard-court Thursday when they host Minneapolis Southwest. The Jacks will also play on Dec 27 and Dec 28 when they host the Wood City Classic sponsored by Northland Sports Online.
