CEC Holds off Marshall

Joe Backus scored the game winning goal Saturday afternoon early in the 1st period to break a 1-1 tie and that would be all the scoring as the Lumberjacks held off Marshall for the 2-1 Lake Superior conference win.

CEC scored the games first goal when Gavin Rasmussen scored a short handed goal at 3:28 of the first period following a tripping penalty to the Lumberjacks Dyan Johnson.

Duluth Marshal evened things up just 30 seconds later, while on the power play when George Grannis scored to even the game at 1-1.

Backus scored the game winner just a little over a minute and a half later, and the Lumberjacks withstood the Hilltoppers charge as they would out shoot CEC 20-13 in the final two periods.

Eric Newman stopped 30 shots for the win while Cam Brandt finished with 21 saves for Marshall in the loss.
