The Esko baseball team has not had a great season in the win-loss column. The Eskomos have been trying to find ways to get into a more consistent winning pattern and on Tuesday they went a long ways toward that effort with back-to-back wins over Hibbing and Cloquet, giving them a three game win streak.

In the 11-5 win over Hibbing the Eskomos trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, but scored six times to gain the lead and then tacked three more in the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth inning to salt away the win.

“Against Hibbing, we got outstanding pitching from Jared Mattson. (Our) Bats came alive and we played like we are capable. Josh Green had a great game at the plate, hitting to all fields.” Esko Head Coach Ben Haugen explained.

In a 3-2 win over Cloquet the Eskomos big hit was a Max Reinertson two-run homer in the top of the first inning. The homer also scored Josh Green as Esko went up 2-0.

The Jacks cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second when Westin Michaud singled with one out and scored on a single to right field by Micah Peterson.

Esko got that run back in the top of the fourth when Jake Stainbrook singled and stole second base, then eventually scored on a single to left by Nate Linder that made the score 3-1.

Cloquet cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning after Kellin Lamirande singled with one out and scored on a base hit by Jeff Sarkela, but that would be all the Jacks would muster against Austen Kovac, who pitched a strong game for the Eskomos.

“Reinertsen’s home run in the first was about all we got,” said Haugen. “But Austen Kovac pitched well; getting several fly ball outs and Kovac managed the game well and really pitched through some tough spots.”
