Proctor Blasts Crosby-Ironton 13-2 On The Road

CROSBY, Minn. – Proctor responded in a big way and improved to 14-1 with a 13-2 win in a non-conference baseball game at Crosby. The game was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Jimmy Merling got the Rails on the board in the first inning by drawing a walk, stealing both second and third base, and scoring on an RBI single by Jesse Scanlon. Merling, a sophomore, is now the PHS single-season record-holder with 17 steals so far in 2011. He is now also the PHS record-holder for career stolen bases, with 30.

Crosby-Ironton took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run single by Tyler Heinlen.

Proctor took the lead for good with a five-run third inning. The Rails tacked on four runs in the fourth inning, and three more in the fifth.

Ryan McCarthy had three hits, scored three runs, and had two RBIs. Nick Nylund had two hits and three RBIs. Justin Scanlon had two hits, scored two runs, and had an RBI. Jesse Scanlon had a hit, scored two runs, and had two RBIs. Ian Scherber had three of Proctor’s nine stolen bases.

Jack Nikko (2-0, 1.00 ERA) earned the complete game win. He allowed one earned run on three hits, three walks, and a hit batsman. He had two strikeouts.


Proctor has now scored 167 runs in 2011, breaking the school record for team runs scored in a season. The previous PHS team record was 161, set in 2010.
Jimmy Merling scored two

in Tuesday’s game. He now has 25 runs scored in 2011, which is also a new PHS single-season record. The previous record of 24 was set by Tyler Pionk in 2010.”


The Rails will wrap up the regular season on Thursday when they travel to Hibbing for a 4:30pm game against the Bluejackets.
