Hermantown took three-of-four singles matches and then nabbed a win at #3 doubles to sneak out a 4-3 win over Eveleth-Gilbert in boys tennis on Tuesday.

Jeremy Amys kicked off the day at #1 singles for the Hawks by downing Steve Aro 7-5, 6-1 and that was followed by Jasin Hammer downing Colten Hennis 6-3, 6-1 at #2 singles. Rounding out the wins in singles was Sean Gibbon who beat Jayden Rolstone-Kobal 6-3, 6-4. Aaron Cooke lost in singles in the #4 position, but it was a tight 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 match to Derek Boese.

In doubles the E-G team of Mark Florey and Travis Kedrwoski beat Jesse Dyason and Travis Peterson at #1 by a 6-3, 6-2 score and at #2 it was Miles Everson and Tim Tuskan of E-G downing Brett Sterk and Nolan Myre 6-2, 6-4. Hermantown closed out the match with a win at #3 doubles by Brody Dammer and Joel Sipper 4-6, 6-3 and 7-5 over Logan Koskela and Charley Kennedy.

The win against Eveleth-Gilbert was the first for the Hawks in the last four years under Head Coach Mark Sisson. Sisson credited some gutsy performances from his squad, explaining to Northland Sports Online. “We got great matches played by Sean Gibbon in third singles, Jasin Hammer filling at second singles, Jeremy Amys at first singles with stomach flu and Joel Sipper/Brody Dammer on a hurt knee in third doubles.”

Hermantown also lost to a stacked Virginia squad by a score of 0-7 on Tuesday. The Hawks will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday when they host the Superior Spartans.
