A sweep in the doubles competition gave the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears just enough wins to defeat Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in boys tennis 4-3 in the tennis opener for both teams on Tuesday.

The Jacks nearly pulled off a sweep in singles competition, which would have given them enough points for the win, but Steve Aro of E-G had just enough in the gas tank to defeat Sean Kedrowski of CEC at #1 singles 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in a great match.

John Scheuer of CEC took #2 singles 6-4. 6-0 over Jayden Rolestone, at #3 singles it was Chaise Pritchett of CEC winning 3-6, 6-1 and 7-6 over Derek Roese, while Ryan Kedrowski managed a convincing win at #4 singles for the Jacks 6-0 and 6-1 over Niles Schenger.

E-G won all three doubles matches, but things didn’t come easy. At #1 doubles it was Mark Florzy and Nick Robilland who won over CEC’s Luke Heine and Tanner Webster in a well-played match 7-5, 6-7 and 6-4. At #2 it was Tim Tuskan and Mike Everson winning 6-2, 6-4 over the CEC pair of Ryan Lind and Robbie Sobczak. Finally at #3 doubles the E-G team of Logan Koskeen and Colton Hennis downed Ryan Wilgohs and Nick Tomhave 6-2, 3-6 and 6-0.
