The Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College softball team improved to 3-5 on the season by winning 2-of-3 games on Friday at the Rosemount Dome in Rosemount, Minnesota.

The Thunder opened with an 11-7 win over Central Lakes Community College, followed that with a 12-2 victory against Hibbing and then dropped a tight 6-5 game to Itasca.

“Against Central Lakes we held an 11-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh,” recalled head coach Kerry Rodd. “Katie Youngberg pitched a great game and Holly Nelson pounded a grand slam to help us take the win. Central Lakes was the top pick to win the north by many coaches this year so that was a big win for us.”

Game two saw the Thunder pound Hibbing 12-2 in five innings as pitcher Kassi Nearly threw a five-hitter and Lisa Muehlberger was 3-for-3 with six runs batted in.

“It was a strong game for Kassi on the mound,” Rodd stated. “Lisa has been just pounding the ball and has been very impressive in the early going for us.”

In the final game the Thunder held a 5-4 lead going into the top of the seventh against last year’s conference champion Itasca, before falling 6-5.

“They have a good ball club and they are well-coached,” commented Rodd. “I think that was a game we should have won, but Katie was suffering a bit of a strained muscle and we had to go to a back up pitcher who didn’t have a lot of time to warm up. All-in-all it was a good game.”

The Thunder are scheduled to open the regular season Tuesday at International Falls against Rainy River Community College.
