All season long Elk River/Zimmerman has quietly put together a solid effort in girls hockey. Thursday night the Elks rode the hot scoring touch of Jonna Curtis, who had four goals, to a 4-1 win over Grand Rapids/Greenway in the Section 7AA Championship game played in Forest Lake.

Curtis got the game’s first goal at 1:51 of the first period on a magnificent unassisted effort, but the Lightning bounced back at 5:06 to tie the game on a power play goal by Bailey Rasmussen with Callie Anderson assisting. The first period ended in a 1-1 deadlock.

The game remained even until just 1:36 remained in the second period when Curtis took a feed from Chelsey Petrich in the slot for a 2-1 Elks lead. Amazingly the Elks incurred the only two penalties in the first period and the only two in the second, but still came out of the second stanza with the lead.

At 8:36 of the third period Curtis converted a pass from Danielle Esperum for a 3-1 lead and the final score of the game from Curtis came at the 10:18 mark in another unassisted effort.

The Lightning scored on their first power play of the game in the first period, but missed their chances to stay in the game by going 0-for-5 with a man advantage the rest of the way.

Tori Herrmann was steady in the net for the Elks finishing with 16 saves, while Sydney Helmbrecht made 21 saves on 25 shots for the Lightning.
