Hermantown defeated Duluth Central 5-2 in a matchup in boys hockey in the Lake Superior Conference on Tuesday night. The Hawks held a slight edge in shots on goal and answered the call each time the Trojans appeared ready to make a run at the powerful Hermantown squad.

Central’s Tyler Kaspari took a feed from Travis Samuelson at 2:26 of the first period and the Trojans were off and flying. Hermantown jumped back into the game at 4:42 of the first when Garrett Skrbich powered home a goal on a pass from Jared Kolquist. The Hawks added a goal at 15:19 from Jared Thomas with Andrew Mattson assisting and they led it 2-1 after one period.

Jake Zeleznikar gave the Hawks a 3-1 lead just 1:14 into the second period with an unassisted goal, but Kaspari’s second goal of the game for Central at 9:18 cut the lead to 3-2. Again Hermantown responded before the end of the period as Skrbich picked up a pretty shorthanded goal at 13:39 with Thomas and Brian LeBlanc notching the assists as the Hawks led it 4-2 entering the final period.

Skrbich completed a hat trick at 5:45 of the third period to complete the scoring. Thomas and Mattson assisted. Thomas picked up a goal and added two assists for Hermantown which outshot the Trojans 27-24 for the game.
