If local hockey teams are going to try and contend with Duluth East for the Section 7AA boys hockey title this season they are going to have to find a way to do that in a hurry. The Greyhounds sent a message to the rest of the section by outscoring Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 8-1 in Duluth on Tuesday night.

The Greyhounds scored on their first two shots of the game and at one point held a 9-0 shot advantage before the Jacks registered their first shot on goal. Dom Toninato scored for East on the first shot of the game after splitting two Jacks defenders. Toninato’s goal came just 1:35 into the game and just 20 seconds later the Greyhounds went up 2-0, on their second shot of the game, when Conner Valesano pumped in a goal.

Trailing 2-0 entering the second period the Jacks gave up three straight goals with the first two tallies coming at 6:54 and just 20 seconds later at 7:14. Ryan Lundgren and Phil Johnson’s goals gave the Greyhounds a 4-0 lead which prompted CEC coach Dave Esse to make a move in goal by replacing John Scheuer with Boyd Smith. At that point in the game the Jacks were outscored 4-0 and the Greyhounds held a 20-7 edge in shots. After his arrival Smith was greeted just two minutes later by Meiers Moore who scored on the power play and the Jacks went down 5-0 after two periods.

Nolan Meyer, a senior forward for CEC, cut the East lead to 5-1 after taking a feed from freshman Karson Kuhlman on the side of the net, but Trevor Olson, Luke Ranier and Alex Toscano all scored for East to put the game into running time for the Greyhounds.

Smith and Scheuer faced 37 shots on goal for the game while the Jacks managed just 17 shots on Greyhound goalie JoJo Jeanetta.
