The Moose Lake-Willow River boys basketball was a little short handed on Monday night when they entered a tough non-conference battle with East Central. With players missing due to the flu, it was predicted to be a hard fought battle and that’s what it was as the Rebels needed a second half comeback to take down the Eagles by a final score of 63-55.

Trevor Nummela finished 9-16 shooting on the night and ended with a game high 21 points as he led the Rebels to the road win. Nummela added four rebounds and two steals in an all around complete game for the Rebels senior.

“We were trailing at halftime,” Head Coach Neil Dickinson told Northland Sports Online, “if someone would have said we would be without those three guys and still knock off East Central, I would have said it would take a big game, and that’s what Trevor did.” Dickinson added “it was a good win, a tough win against a very good team.”

Following Nummela in scoring was Caleb Koecher who finished with 15 points on the night, Ryan Adamczak added 13, Mike Bennett had 8, and Jake Disterhaupt finished with 6 in the win. Disterhaupt played a big game on the boards, finishing with 10 rebounds on the night. “Bennett hit a big shot down at the end which sealed the win for us,” Dickinson said, “It was everyone stepping up when they had to.”

Nic Zaudtzke led the Eagles in scoring with 18 points on the night, Tom Battaglia finished with 13, and Chad Jarvis finished with 11 points in the loss for the Eagles. The biggest factor in the game was points off of turnovers as the Rebels scored 17 points off turnovers compared to only 8 for the Eagles.

Moose Lake-Willow River improves to 19-2 on the season and they are back in action and look to make it 15 wins in a row on Friday when they host Floodwood in a Polar League match-up. East Central falls to 14-4 on the season and they are in action again on Tuesday night when they play at McGregor in a non-conference match-up.
