The Virginia Blue Devils boys basketball team had been on a roll heading into Saturday night’s game with the Lumberjacks at home. Virginia had won five games in a row and twelve of their last fourteen and they remained on a roll as they beat the Lumberjacks by a final score of 73-55.

In another close contest by the Lumberjacks, it was Cloquet playing tough in the first half trailing by only six points at 38-32. Some hot shooting by Cloquet kept the game close, but the second half was another story as Lumberjack turnovers led to a big second half lead that was too much for Cloquet to overcome.

Adam Laine was a spark in the first half, he entered the game with Cloquet trailing by nine points and he scored five points which allowed Cloquet to cut the lead down midway through the first half. Three turnovers in the last 1:49 led to three easy baskets and the lead at halftime.

The second half saw the Blue Devils come out and immediately saw them pull out to a twenty point lead. The lead grew to as many as twenty-two before Cloquet would cut it to its final deficit of eighteen points.

Adam Laine led the Lumberjacks in scoring as he finished with fourteen points on the night; he also added four blocked shots. Zach Peterson followed Laine with 11 points, Andy Wappes, Dillon Johnson and Dane Kiehn all finished with 6, Sean Ferrell added 4, and it was Karl Palmquist, Maxx Brenner, Trent Moe, and Cody Stevens all finishing with 2 points in the loss for Cloquet.

Tyler Wilson and Mitch Buck led the Blue Devils in scoring with 19 points each on the night. Cavan Stackpool added 16 points, Patrick Conaway added 8, Nathan Anderson finished with 6, Corey Mautson 3, and Jordan Lindholm closed the scoring with 1 point in the victory.

The Lumberjacks fall to 4-13 after this non-conference loss on the road, they are back in action again on Tuesday when they play at Hermantown. The Blue Devils improve to 14-4 on the season and they host the Broncos of International Falls on Tuesday night.
