CEC Girls Remain Hot With 4-2 Win Over Silver Bay

The win didn’t come easy for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team on Monday night. Playing at home against Silver Bay the Jacks picked up their sixth win in a row by beating the feisty Mariners 4-2.

Kaitlyn Miller gave the Jacks a 1-0 lead with the lone goal of the first period. Kara Cresap assisted on the goal which came at 4:26. CEC outshot the Mariners 10-7 in the opening stanza.

The Jacks went up 2-0 at the 1:11 mark of the second period on a goal by Callie Halverson with Megan Nelson and Kelly Carlson adding assists. Silver Bay bounced back with a goal before the end of the second period by Marina Carter to cut the lead to 2-1 entering the final period.

Carter tied the score at 7:59 of the third period with an unassisted goal and the game suddenly took on a much more intense atmosphere. CEC finally broke through with the go ahead goal when Halverson scored on the power play. Bailey Rykken, of Silver Bay, went off at 14:14 for hooking and just over a minute later, at 15:23, it was
Carlson picking up a goal with Carley Esse assisting. The Jacks got an empty net goal from Emily Gustafson to make the final 4-2.

Alyssa Acheson was strong again in the net for CEC finishing with 20 saves on 22 shots, while Silver Bay goalie Nikki Mealay recorded 29 saves on 33 shots for the Mariners.

The Jacks will wrap up their season tonight on the road in Hibbing. CEC is currently 13-9-2 on the season.
