A quick start on Thursday night helped to propel the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team to a 3-1 road win over Andover.

CEC jumped on Andover to the tune of a 14-6 shot advantage in the first period. The edge in shots parlayed itself into a 2-0 lead after the opening stanza. Mark Savage picked up CEC’s first goal with the lone assist going to defenseman Justin Hammann at the 4:04 mark. Andover’s Bjorn Kjelstad went off at 7:06 for a hooking penalty and it took CEC just 10 seconds to respond with a power play goal when Beau Michaud scored with Karson Kuhlman getting the assist.

In the second period it was Kuhlman scoring his 12th goal of the year to give CEC a 3-0 lead as the Jacks top line of Jack McFarlane and Nolan Meyer were also in on the scoring giving the trio a total of 107 points on the year.

Andover pulled to within 3-1 with just 15 seconds remaining in the period on a power play tally by Tyler Jokinen. The goal came just 11 seconds after CEC defender Max Reinertson went to the penalty box for a checking from behind penalty.

Overall the Jacks put 35 shots on Andover goalie Chase Perry who finished with 32 saves. Meanwhile on the other end of the ice CEC goalie Boyd Smith finished with 30 saves on 31 shots.

With the win, CEC ups their record to 13-6-0 on the season. Next week will go a long way in deciding the Lake Superior Conference Champion with the Jacks facing Denfeld-Central on Tuesday at the Heritage Center, then taking on a one loss Hermantown team on the road also.
