The University of Minnesota Duluth couldn’t stop the Huskies behind the arc as St. Cloud State University rained 12 three-pointers in a 98-74 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory at Romano Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

UMD (6-6, 3-3 NSIC) falls back to the .500 mark as they close the season’s first half whiel St. Cloud State (6-5, 3-3 NSIC) moves a game above and bounces back to even in NSIC play.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Five Huskies had double figures scoring but the three-point shooting of senior forward Connor Niehaus (6-of-8, 18 points) and sophomore guard Scottie Stone (5-of-9, 21 points) proved the difference. Junior forward Donnell Cegers also hit 20 points for SCSU off the bench.  Junior guard Eddie Alcantara finished with a game-high eight boards, seven of which came on the defensive end, to lead the Huskies
• Senior center Brett Ervin led three Bulldogs hitting double digits with a 9-of-18 night and eight points at the line. Senior guard Reece Zoelle hauled in a team-high seven rebounds to go with 11 points and four assists while junior guard Pierre Newton had 15 for UMD.
Up by a score of 46-38 after shooting 55.2 percent in the opening half, St. Cloud State seemed incapable of missing out of the break – particularly after UMD trimmed the lead to 51-50 with 15:08 remaining. The Huskies scored on their next five possessions, including four threes to climb ahead 65-50. Newton broke UMD’s scoring drought by hitting a free throw, but SCSU would eventually make it an 18-1 run that sealed the victory for UMD would get no closer than 16 points in the final 11:27 with the Huskies sealing a 24-point victory when reserves came in for the final minutes.

UMD will have a bye week for the Christmas holiday next weekend before returning to action in the new year when they travel to Concordia University, St. Paul on Friday, January 2, 2015. Opening tip is scheduled for 8:00 p.m., following the women’s contest.
