NSO – NEWS RELEASE

In the season of giving, the University of Minnesota Duluth was happy to take — personal fouls, that is — as the Bulldogs went to the free throw line 30 times to claim a 75-74 upset victory over the No. 21-ranked St. Cloud State University in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first-half finale at Romano Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

UMD (5-5, 3-3 NSIC) ended 2014 on a high note, handing No. 21 St. Cloud State (8-1, 5-1 NSIC) their first defeat of the season.

HIGHLIGHTS
• The Bulldogs shot just 47.1 percent from the floor but were 19-of-30 at the charity stripe while St. Cloud State finished shooting 47.3 percent but went to the line just seven times for five points.
• Junior forward Taylor Meyer continued to lead the Bulldog offense with a double-double – 28 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 12-of-19 from the floor while also addeing a pair of steals and two assists. Senior guards Danielle Flood (17) and Jessica Newman (12) also hit double digits scoring for UMD.
• Sophomore guard Chelsea Nooker had 22 points of 10-of-12 shooting before fouling out late in the game. Junior forward Nichole Wittman and Kyli Van Klein tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
The Bulldogs took a 33-31 edge to the locker room despite shooting just 37.9 percent in the opening half, making good on 9-of-12 trips to the charity stripe. St. Cloud shot 45.2 percent at the break but had just one point from the line after 20 minutes. Three-point shooting was basically a wash with St. Cloud State holding a 5-to-4 edge on makes but shot just 29.4 percent beyond the arc while UMD made just 11 attempts at threes and just a pair after opening up a 12-point edge with 9:01 remaining thanks to an 13-to-2 run entirely on points in the paint. UMD would finish with 32 points inside and 15 points on second chances as they hauled in 17 offensive rebounds, nearly matching SCSU’s 18 on the defensive end. Despite a late rally by the Huskies, UMD made enough of their free throws and Newman hauled in a rebound on the errant last-chance shot by St. Cloud to pick up the win.
