The hosting Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels edged out the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers on Monday as they held on to a close victory. The Rebels downed the Hilltoppers by a score of 2-1 Monday afternoon.

“We needed to win one of the close ones,” head coach Katie Collier stated. “That close game we lost to Barnum helped us…I can say you learn things from close games and in blowouts you don’t get to work on things you need to,” Collier added.

Moose Lake-Willow River would need to come up with a big play in the top of the seventh to win this one. It was a play that pitcher Katie Youngberg and catcher Kim Ergen had practiced since they were in third grade that ended the hopes of Marshall. With two out and runners on second and third, Youngberg’s wild pitch went to the backstop. Ergen grabbed the ball and tossed it to Youngberg who came to cover home plate and Youngberg tagged Duluth Marshall base runner Tammy Mckee as she tried to score from third. That was the third out and the Rebels won their tenth game of the season.

The Rebels would score their two runs in the fourth inning. Ergen would single, steal second and third and score on a single by Amanda Larson. Larson would also score on a single by Molly Wasche later in the inning. Other Rebels with hits were Emily Wasche, Mary Moonen, and Sam Juhl.

The Rebels improve to 10-2 on the season and are in action
on Tuesday against Silver Bay. Duluth Marshall falls to 5-6 on the season and play Cloquet on Wednesday afternoon in Cloquet.
