CLOQUET – By the time the third period rolled around in the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton versus Superior girl’s hockey game on Monday night the Lumberjacks held a substantial lead. The lead was big enough that CEC coach Mike Bushey elected to move forwards back to defense, and vice versa, in an effort to allow players to learn the game from another perspective. In the end, the Jacks skated away with a 5-0 victory over the Spartans.

The Jacks took a 1-0 lead 11:57 into the first period when Carley Esse caused a turnover at the Spartan blue line, skated in on goalie Makayla Pitt and tucking a shot into the back of the net. That would be the only goal of the first period as CEC outshot the Spartans 11-2.

In the second period the Jacks picked up three more scores including a pair of goals by Kalie Shevich at 2:23 and 9:29, with a goal by Emily Gustafson sandwiched in between at 5:34. Gustafson also assisted on both goals by Shevich and Esse added an assist on the second goal by Shevich. Kristi Konietzko assisted on Gustafson’s goal after causing a miscue off the stick of a Superior player on defense.

The only goal of the final period was a pretty shorthanded tally by Jessie Ryan which was a brilliant goal that was unassisted. Ryan managed to pick-pocket a Spartan played at mid-ice and then stormed in on Pitt and slipped a shot between the Superior goalie’s pads for the goal.

CEC split goaltending duties between Alyssa Acheson and Katie Beckman. The duo combined for six saves, while Pitt faced 44-shots and made 39-saves.

The win moves the Lady Jacks record to 7-8 on the season. They will have a week off before they travel to White Bear Lake to take on the Bears.
