The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels fell on Saturday to Crosby Ironton in the second game of the Hickey-Finlayson tournament. The Rangers came away from the tournament with two big wins. This was a shock to most observers as the Rangers had not yet won a game and entered the three-game tournament with a record of 0-11.

The Rebels fell to the Rangers by a score of 14-9. Moose Lake-Willow River entered the game with only two losses on the season. The Rangers got their first win in that game over the Rebels.

“We didn’t play very well,” head coach Lyle Halverson told Northland Sports Online. He continued, “they jumped in front 11-1 after two innings…We had our chances but we didn’t come through, even in the last inning when we were down by five runs, we had bases loaded, no one out and didn’t score.”

The Rebels would out hit the Rangers by a margin of 13-8.
However, the biggest factor was their inability to score runs when needed. Moose Lake-Willow River left 14 runners on base against Crosby Ironton. “You won’t win a lot of games if you leave runners on base like that,” Halverson said.

With the loss, the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels fall to 9-3 on the season. They will face Hinckley Finlayson in the final game of the round robin tournament. The Crosby Ironton Rangers improve to 1-11 on the season and they will next play Aitkin in the tournament.
