NSO – NEWS RELEASE

A pair of free kick goals put the University of Minnesota Duluth behind in the first half, and the Bulldogs could not overcome Minot State University in a 3-1 defeat at Malosky Stadium on Friday evening.

UMD (5-8-0, 5-5-0 NSIC) got a free kick goal of their own from senior forward Maureen Stormont, but it was not enough as Minot State (6-5-2, 5-4-1 NSIC) edged the Bulldogs under the lights on their home turf.

HIGHLIGHT
• Stormont continued to inch closer to history with her unassisted tally in the 40th minute. She now sits within seven points and three goals of the respective program records held by Jen Warrick Reierson (’01).
• Senior goalkeeper Marissa Rosa made five saves as the Bulldog defense held Minot State to 11 shots on the night and just three in the second half.

The Beavers scored two goals on free kicks – the first a strike from 20 yards out and the second from 40-plus by Emilie Rebelo in the first half and took a 2-1 lead to the locker room. UMD led in shots 11-8 at the break, but came back firing both offensively and defensively in the second half. The Bulldogs out-shot Minot 21-3 overall in the second and directed nine shots on goal, all saved by Beaver goalkeeper Celene Johnson, who finished with 11 on the night. Senior midfielder Jennifer Smith led the way with nine shots on the night, while Stormont had seven, and sophomore midfielder Marissa Ganske added three. Minot State extended its lead with another unassisted tally by Jamie MacFarlane, who swiped a ball in front of the net and was able to slip it past Rosa for the goal.
