NSO – NEWS RELEASE

For the fourth time in six meetings, the University of Minensota Duluth women’s hockey team went into extra time with the University of North Dakota, but unlike the prior three overtime skates, the Bulldogs didn’t surivive the additional five minutes.

No. 8/10 UND scored just 1:46 into extra time to slip by UMD 2-1 in the confines of Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, ND.  It was the Bulldogs second consecutive overtime game and third in their first seven games.

UMD took the first lead of the game 3:56 into the second period on senior winger Jenna McParland‘s 98th career point,  a batted in loose puck for her third goal of the year.  Senior blueliner Emma Stauber‘s hustle play forced North Dakota netminder Shelby Amsley-Benzie out of the net and Stauber created McParland’s scoring chance by banging the puck off the boards for her second helper of the season.

The Bulldogs held on to that 1-0 lead until 13:20 of the third period, when UND’s Samatha Hanson finally solved Bulldog goaltender Kayla Black.  That 1-1 stalemate would hold through the end of regulation, but not overtime, and UMD was forced into its fourth setback of the season against a ranked team.

Black made 31 total saves, including 15 alone in third period.  North Dakota used a third period shot advantage of 16-7 to earn the overall shot on goal  mark of the night at 33-27.  Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill, with UMD going 3-of-3 and UND 4-of-4.

Both teams will rematch tomorrow afternoon, with game time set for 2 p.m.
