University of Minnesota Duluth junior Andrew Brees is among 24 placekickers who have been recognized by the Fred Mitchell Award committee for their excellence on the football field and in the community during the month of September. Andrew Brees

 

The group consists of 13 placekickers from the six different college divisions nationally – NCAA FBS (13), NCAA  II (6), NCAA III (3), NAIA (1) and NJCAA (1).

“These 24 placekickers are succeeding on the gridiron and their civic and volunteer activities are having a positive impact in their communities,” said  Fred Mitchell Award Selection Committee Chairman Chris Kearney added, ” We are delighted to honor this group.”

Brees, a third-year starter from West Allis, Wis., currently tops the No. 4-ranked Bulldogs in scoring with 26 points.  Eleven of those points came in UMD’s thrilling 23-22 overtime victory at Augustana College on Sept. 13. Through four games, the 2012 All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first team pick and 2014 USA College Football Preseason All-American  has connected on six of eight field goals and six of seven extra points in addition to scoring once on a two-point conversion run.

Since his arrival at UMD, Brees has volunteered at Courage Center Duluth (working with people with disabilities), the annual Duluth Lions Club Pancake Day, the ALS Blizzard Tour and various UMD sports clinics.
