Jared Thomas managed to break open a tight game in the second period and the Hermantown Hawks went on to defeat the Superior Spartans 6-3 in boys hockey on Tuesday night.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the second period, it was Thomas’ goal that gave the Hawks a lead they would never relinquish. The goal came at 2:13 on the power play with assists going to Jared Kolquist and Garrett Skrbich.

The teams played to a 2-2 first period tie after one period. Superior had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Dan Litchke at 2:57 on the power play, but the Hawks evened things on a goal at 13:32 by Thomas. The Spartans again gained an edge at the 16:25 mark by Nolan Holcombe, but just 12 seconds later the game was tied by Skrbich to end the first period.

Jesse Dyson managed to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead at 5:35 of the third period, but again the Spartans rallied back with a goal by Litchke at 9:36 on the power play. The Hawks ended hopes of a Spartan tie with an empty net goal with just 28 seconds left to secure the win.

Connor Lucas finished with 23 saves for the Hawks, while Spartan goalie, Scott Crawford made 30 saves.

The win puts the Hawks record at a perfect 4-0 for the season. They will be back in action on Saturday when they play host to Rogers in a 3:00pm game.
