Lumberjack Boys Drop Second Straight Road Game

The Cloquet Boys Basketball team continues to find it tough going on this early season and things will not get any easier as the Lumberjacks will face one of the premier teams on Tuesday in the Minnesota Transition Charter. The second road game of the season Friday night saw the Lumberjacks take on Chisago Lakes Area in Chisago Lakes and the Wildcats knocked off Cloquet by a final score of 82-54.


The Wildcats scored the first basket of the game when Beni Figini hit a shot 22 seconds into the game and Chisago Lakes led 2-0. Cloquet senior Andy Wappes then tied the game with a jump shot with 17 ½ minutes remaining in the first half. That was the last time the game was tied as the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run to build the lead to 12-2. The Lumberjacks cut the lead down to three points midway through the first half but could never get any closer as the Wildcats built a 55-31 lead at halftime.


The second half saw the same with Chisago lakes continuing to control the ball and dominated the game in the paint, outscoring Cloquet 40-14 in the lane. Another telling stat on how effective the Wildcats were is they outscored Cloquet 25-1 in points off turnovers. The Lumberjacks committed 19 turnovers while the Wildcats turned the ball over 14 times.


Beni Figini led all scorers Friday night, finishing with 33 points, including two three pointers and going 5-7 from the free throw line. Figini added 15 rebounds for Chisago Lakes in the win. The Wildcats also shot an amazing 55% from the field in the win over Cloquet. Jordan Hickcox scored 13 points for Chisago Lakes in the win as well.


Andy Wappes led the Lumberjacks with 17 points Friday night, including nine free throws. Following Wappes in scoring was Zach Peterson he added 13 points, Trent Moe finished with 7, Sean Ferrell and Cody Stevens each added 4 points, Adam Laine and Dane Kiehn scored 3 points apiece, Max Brenner scored 2, and James Counselor added 1.


The Lumberjacks fall to 0-2 on the season and the will be in the Twin Cities on Tuesday when they face the Wolves of Minnesota Transition Charter. The Lumberjacks will close out with their forth road game to start the season at Proctor next Friday night.
