Hawks Even Record With Win Over Eveleth-Gilbert

The Hermantown Hawks evened their record on this early season Thursday night as the Hawks defeated the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears by a final score of 78-38 at home. The Hawks, coming off a loss Tuesday night to Esko responded with the forty point win.


Hermantown jumped out early Thursday night, and with defense and timely shooting it was the Hawks building a halftime lead of 47-21. The Hawks continued with great pressure on the defensive side in the second half as the cruised to the non-conference win.


“We had a nice balanced attack,” Head Coach Michael Pothast told Northland Sports Online. “Corey Anderson and Spencer Johnson played great on both ends for us.” Pothast added, “It was also nice to see Folman (Kevin) hit some big shots.” Folman had two big three points for Hermantown.


“Our defensive pressure is what keyed our biggest runs.” Pothast stated, “Guys were really putting pressure on the ball and we had other guys stepping nicely into passing lanes.” The defense held the Golden Bears to only 38 total points including a mere 17 in the second half.


The Hawks were led in scoring by Spencer Johnson, and Corey Anderson, both who had 16 points in the Hermantown win. Jake Lesar, Kevin Quillen, and Kevin Folman all had 8 points, Corey Kucza added 5 points, Steven Borndal, Alex Comstock, & Lane Wargin all had 3 points each. Mitch Hiner, and Branden Shimmin each had 2 points and Parker Anderson and Jeff Schade closed with 1 point each.


Hermantown improves to 1-1 and they are in action again Friday night when the will face Duluth Marshall in Duluth. The Golden Bears fall to 0-2 on the season and they face Babbitt-Embarrass in Babbitt Friday night.
