BARNUM- Bombers Head Coach Richard Newman told Northland Sports Online “We were pretty lucky when he missed both those free throws that gave us the game.” The two free throws he was referring to was Fulda Raider forward Matthew Appel who missed his two free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining as the Bombers defeated the Raiders 41-40 Friday night at home.

“It was a tight game back and forth all night.” Newman told NSO, “we had some chances to seal the win and we didn’t.” Newman mentioned “we tried to run some time off the clock with a minute to go but we fired up a three pointer that didn’t go in and it gave Fulda a chance to win the game.” Even though Fulda missed two free throws that could have given the Raiders the road victory, Barnum head coach Richard Newman said “if we made some of our lay-ups we missed the game would not have been as close.”

Barnum and Fulda battled all game long with Fulda taking small leads, as would the Bombers, but both teams fought their way back and took leads of their own. Jacob Naslund hit a shot as time expired in the first half to give Barnum a 23-21 lead at halftime.

The second half saw the Bombers and the Raiders fight tooth and nail again with Barnum in front by two points. A foul on the Bombers sent Matthew Appel to the free throw line where he made one out of two shots to cut the Barnum lead to 41-40. Barnum then on the offensive end missed a bonus from the free throw line, giving the Raiders one last chance with ten seconds remaining. The Raiders worked the ball down low and a pass heading to Appel was deflected but ended up in Appel’s hands and Appel went strong towards the basket and a foul was called.

With the win the Bombers improve to 2-0 on the season and will face the Cromwell Cardinals Monday night at home. Justin Newman led the Bombers in scoring with 12 points on the night, Josh Hogan added 10, Naslund finished with 9, Luke “Bubba” Chalberg pounded in 6 points, Danny Warpala added 3, and Andy Youngren closed the scoring with 1 point on the night. Aaron Tiesler led all scorers with 18 points for Fulda.
