Cloquet – It was not pretty, but the Cloquet girls’ softball team managed to hang on for an exciting 3-2 win over Duluth Central at Braun Park on Thursday night.

The Lumberjacks fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, but managed to tie the game after Dalyce Gustafson roped a double to left center field and eventually scored in the bottom of the first. Gustafson had two hits in the game.

After falling behind 2-1, the Jacks were able to come back and tie the game on another hit by Gustafson in third and they took the lead when Gustafson drove in a run in the fourth.

Central’s best chance at tying the game came in the top of the fifth when Molly Jadzewski led off with a double and went to third on a passed ball, but the Jacks defense came up big when the next batter hit a hard grounder to second baseman Kelly Carlson. Carlson caught the ball on her knees with her backhand, and while still on her knees, threw Jadzewski out at home to help secure the win.

Katrina Korman tossed a complete game 5-hitter, while the Jacks managed just four hits off eighth grader Sarah Hendrickson.
