The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels opened their 2010-2011 boys basketball season with a tight close win over the Tigers of Rush City by a score of 45-43. The Rebels led by one point at halftime and went on to win by two in Willow River Tuesday night.

Trevor Nummela paced the Rebels with 17 points on the night as the Rebels win this sectional match up. The Rebels struggled shooting from the field, Rush City sat back in a zone and allowed the Rebels to fire away, but the open shot did not fall. The Rebels also struggled from the free throw line only making 4 out of 12 free throws.

“We had so many looks at the basket,” Head coach Neil Dickinson told Northland Sports Online. “They sat back in the zone and we had many good shots, we just couldn’t get them to fall.” Dickinson added “with them sitting in their zone it was hard for us to get out in transition and push the ball up and down the floor.”

A big boost for the Rebels came at the hand of Michael Bennett, who came off the bench and hit two big clutch three pointers for the Rebels. Those three pointers helped seal the close win at home.

Following Nummela’s 17 points it was Taylor Mattison who scored 8 points, he also nabbed 10 rebounds for Moose Lake-Willow River. Caleb Koecher, Ryan Adamczak, and Bennett all finished with 6 points, and Adam Johnson rounded out the scoring with 2 points on the night. Adamczak also finished with four assists in the win.

The Rebels start the season 1-0. They are back in action again on Friday when they travel to Wrenshall to face the Wrens. The Rebels will also face the state ranked Virginia Bluedevils on Saturday night in Willow River.
