The Barnum Bomber boys basketball team opened its season with a very impressive win Tuesday night over the Carlton Bulldogs by a final score of 60-18. The Bombers opened up with a 35-8 lead at halftime and went on to win this Polar League contest on the road.

“We really played very well defensively,” Head Coach Richard Newman told Northland Sports Online. “The Bulldogs did a good job of coming off our weak side but their shots just were not falling.” Newman added that “there were some first game jitters but we settled down and we played pretty well.”

The first half started slow with both teams struggling to find their shooting touch, with the game score a mere 9-3 at the ten minute mark. Barnum found their shooting touch as they closed on a 26-5 run to end the first half.

“It was a total team effort tonight,’ Newman said, “We had kids step off the bench and play a huge role.” Danny Warpala played a big part scoring 12 points off the Bomber bench and he also added a three pointer.” Newman said “His biggest contribution was the five steals he came up with, that really got us going.”

Northland Sports All-Area Team member from 2009-2010 Josh Hogan led the Bombers in scoring with 13 points, Warpala finished with 12, Justin Newman added 9, Jake Naslund poured in 7, Hector Chavez finished with 5, Jake Blumer and Luke Charlberg each had 4 points, Jake Golen, Sam Anderson, and Bobby Minkkinen all finished with 2 points each.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Matt Lund who had 8 points. Cody Peterson was next with 5, Nick Vacura scored 3 points, Eric Adams and Spencer Walton each scored 1 point in the loss. Peterson and Vacura each had a three pointer for Carlton.

The Bombers are in action again on Friday night as part of a boys and girls doubleheader in Barnum against the Fulda Raiders. Carlton is back in action on Friday night also when they will travel to Esko to take on the Eskomos in a Polar League battle.
