CLOQUET- On a cold brisk Tuesday night, the Esko Eskomos girls basketball team made the short trip from Esko to Cloquet and the cold outside had little effect on the inside as the Eskomos heated up fast and won the non-conference game in Cloquet. Esko went on a 12-0 run late in the first half to distance themselves from the Lumberjacks and never look back as Esko wins 68-41.

Esko and Cloquet battled early in the first half with Esko jumping out to small leads, but the Lumberjacks responded, and each time Esko would take a lead of six or more the Jacks came back. Annabel Morrisroe hit a shot in the lane to cut an Esko lead to 18-14, but that was that last time Cloquet would get that close.

The 12-0 run put Esko ahead by 16 points late in the first half and the Eskomos closed out the half with a 38-20 lead. “We were doing pretty well at shutting them down for a while to start the game,” Head Cloquet Coach Jeff Ojanen told Northland Sports Online. “Their defense did a good job of forcing us into too many mistakes and once they built that lead, there was no way to come back.”

The second half started the way the first half ended with the Eskomos continuing to roll as they extended their lead to thirty-one points at one point. Keely Deadrick led the Eskomos with 28 points on the night including four 3-pointers in the Esko victory. Marisa Shady added 10 points in the win, Savanna Trapp and Lydia Pelletier each scored 9 points, Alyson Glumac added 4, Stephanie Bandelin ended with 3, Danielle Salo and Megan Reuer had 2 apiece, and Stephanie Miller ended with 1 point for Esko.

The Lumberjacks were led in scoring by Morrisroe who finished with 14 points, Kenzie Rathe chipped in with 11, Felicia Hraban added 6, Kayla Masessa and Krista Schmitz both ended with 4 points each, and rounding out the scoring was Avery Bieri with 2 points.

The Eskomos improve to 2-0 on the season, and will be in action again on Thursday when they will face another local rival in the Carlton Bulldogs. The Lumberjacks fall to 1-2 overall; they are back in action on Friday at home versus the Oredockers of Ashland.
