CLOQUET – Special teams are an important part in all sporting events. On Tuesday night the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team used special teams nearly to perfection in picking up a 5-1 home victory over Hibbing/Chisholm.

The lone first period goal was the only goal scored in a five-on-five situation. Haley Ketola picked up her first goal as a high school player when she deflected a Megan Nelson shot from the point past Blue Jacket goalie Dory Johnson.

Hibbing/Chisholm tied the game with a power play goal 5:57 into the second period when Katie Dye converted a tap-in from Samantha Argir.

Before the second period came to a close the Lumberjacks got a scrappy goal from Kelly Carlson who jumped on a loose puck on the edge of the crease and slammed it past Johnson for a 2-1 lead. The power play goal was set up by Kara Cresap who put the initial shot on Johnson and then Carlson pounced on the loose puck for the goal.

Just 37 seconds into the third period the Jacks Caitlin Lilly sent Jessie Ryan in all alone on Johnson for another power play goal and CEC went up 3-1. At 4:54 the Lumberjacks were killing a penalty to Cresap for a hook when Kalie Shevich stepped in on an outlet pass and drove home a shorthanded goal to make it 4-1. The Jacks topped off the scoring on an unassisted 4-on-4 goal by Ryan, who swiped a clearing attempt by the Blue Jackets and marched in on Johnson all alone at 11:05.

The Lumberjacks outshot the Blue Jackets 40-15 in the game, including the third period where the Jacks held a 15-1 edge in shots on goal.

Alyssa Acheson and Katie Beckman split time in the nets for the Jacks.
