DULUTH- On Tuesday night the Duluth East Greyhounds were involved in a game with Bloomington Jefferson that featured 71 fouls called. Thursday it was another whistle laden game as 54 fouls were called in a Greyhounds 84-52 win over Cloquet at Duluth East High School. Even with all the fouls called the Greyhounds used balanced scoring and outscored the Lumberjacks 37-11 off of turnovers.


Duluth East jumped out to a early lead but Cloquet fought back and the Lumberjacks took a 12-11 lead when Sarah McMillen hit two free throws giving Cloquet a one point lead. The Greyhounds took a quick time out and Head Coach Bill Kunze of Duluth East saw his team go on a 9-0 run over the next 4 minutes. The Greyhounds would close out the first half on a 23-7 run to lead at the break by thirteen at 34-21.


“They are a real good team” Head Coach Jeff Ojanen told Northland Sports Online. “We need to get better, tonight we saw improvement, and we saw things where we need to get better at.” The Lumberjacks out-rebounded the Greyhounds on the night grabbing 34 rebounds to the Greyhounds 28. “I had a tough early season schedule because we need to see areas that we need to get better and we will, our goal isn’t about winning and losing right now; it’s about getting ready for tournament time down the road.”


The Greyhounds came out in the second half and scored the first seven points of the half, building a twenty point lead and never looked back as they rolled to the thirty-two point win. Annabel Morrisroe led all scorers with 21 points on the night, other Lumberjack scorers included: Kenzie Rathe and McMillen who each finished with 6 points. Krista Schmitz had 5 points, Kayla Masessa and Avery Bieri each ended with 4, Carri Zeadow added 3, Mary Keller finished with 2, and Felicia Hraban had 1 point in the loss.


The Greyhounds had five players in double figures including Alex Freeman with 15, Anne Mahoney 14, Macie Dorow had 13, Shamika Hopkins added 11, and Becca Zwak finished with 10 points. The Greyhounds had eight other players that scored in the win Thursday night. The Greyhounds shot an outstanding 43 % from the field in the win.


The Lumberjacks fall to 1-1 on the season and they will face the Esko Eskomos on Tuesday night in Cloquet. The Greyhounds are in action again on Saturday afternoon when they host St. Francis at East High School. With the non-conference win Thursday the Greyhounds even their season record at 1-1 as well.
