Barnum – The Barnum Bombers and the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels played another epic match-up against each other. This time
the girls’ softball game took place in Barnum on Thursday afternoon. The Bombers came from behind twice to tie the game and eventually went on to win 3-2 in nine innings.

The game on Thursday featured two of the top three teams in the Polar League. Barnum, Moose Lake-Willow River and Silver Bay were the top three teams entering Thursday’s game but now with the ML-WR loss and Silver Bay losing to Carlton on Thursday, Barnum sits alone atop the Polar League.

“We squandered many chances and we left a ton of runners on base,”
coach Randy Myhre told NSO. “we did not execute well defensively at times, made a couple of mental goofs but with so many people lining the field and 4 – 9th graders and 2 sophomores in our starting line up, I think we were a little nervous.”

The Rebels got on the scoreboard first as Maddy Adamczak would lead off the top of the third with a single. Emily Wasche would single and Mary Moonen would add the third straight single and dive in Adamczak as the Rebels led 1-0. The Bombers would tie the score in the bottom of the fifth when Katie Myhre had a one out walk; she advanced to second on a pass ball, and then scored as Katrina Newman singled to center field to tie the game at 1-1.

Moose Lake answered in the top of the sixth when Amanda Larson singled, she stole second scored on a Hillary Peterson base hit to right field making the score 2-1. Barnum would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh when Brianna Mattson singled to start the inning she advanced to second on a Jess Newman single and would score on a ground out by Katie Myhre. The seventh inning ended all square at 2-2. It stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth when Brianna Mattson again singled to start the inning she moved to second on a sacrifice by Jessica Newman. Katie Myhre then doubled to center field to drive in Mattson from second base and the Bomber’s remain perfect on the season.

Katie Myhre was the winning pitcher. she threw a total of four innings, gave up three hits, one run, four strikeouts, and walked one in the win. Katrina Newman, who came back after surgery, played well today for the Bombers. she pitched five innings, gave up six hits, one run, nine strikeouts and walked three Rebel batters. Katie Youngberg pitched eight and a third innings. she gave up three runs on five hits, while striking out seven and walked six in the loss.
