Spending the weekend in the Twin Cities area brought mixed results for the CEC Lumberjacks girls hockey team. Friday night they squared off against Eden Prairie and battled to a 3-3 overtime tie. Saturday brought a matinee game against Stillwater, which didn’t work out well for the Jacks with CEC ending up on the wrong end of a 4-0 shutout.

Against Eden Prairie, the Jacks found themselves into a quick 1-0 hole when Karissa Olsen scored just 27 seconds into the game for the Eagles. Callie Halverson brought the Jacks even with the first of her two goals at the 2:43 mark with Kelly Carlson picking up the assist on the play. That tie was short lived in a back and forth first period when just over a minute later Bizzy Schmelzle scored, putting Eden Prairie up 2-1. The dust had barely settled on Shmelzle’s goal when 13 seconds later, Kalie Shevich scored with an assist from Dalyce Gustafson to knot things back up at two apiece.

Things settled down in the second period and appeared to be going the Lumberjacks way with Halverson scoring her second goal of the game, this one on a power play with assists going to Gustafson and Carley Esse. Unlike the first period this would be the only goal of the period with the Jacks heading to the locker room up 3-2 after two periods.

Four and a half minutes into the third period, Eden Prairie tied things up for the third time when Schmelzle tallied her second goal of the game. The 3-3 tie held up through the remainder of the third period and an evenly played overtime period which saw each team put six shots on goal.

Alyssa Acheson was brilliant in her high school goaltending debut, stopping 30 of 33 shots to earn the tie. Her counterpart McKenzie Johnson was equal to the task also, making 31 saves on 34 shots.

Samantha Reiter led Stillwater with two goals and an assist on Saturday in a 4-0 shutout of the Lumberjacks. CEC was outshot 30-15 on the day.

The Lumberjacks record is now a well rounded 1-1-1 on the early season. They will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Chisago Lakes.
