TWO HARBORS – Hockey fans were treated to a heck of a game Friday night in Two Harbors, as the Duluth Clydesdales broke a seven game winless streak by beating the Sioux Lookout Flyers in a shootout for a 5-4 win.

It was fairly even play for much of the game, with the Flyers taking a lead five minutes into the game on a power play goal by Brett Wur. Duluth answered back less than two minutes later as Two Harbors native Casey Eckman scored a power play goal of his own to even the score at 1-1.

Duluth busted out of the gates in the second, with Ryan Palm scoring just ten seconds into the stanza. Tom Paine made it 3-1 at the 12:06 mark on another power play goal for the Clydesdales.

In the third Matt Jerulle scored his first goal of the season, putting Duluth up 4-1 four minutes in. But there was no quit in the Flyers, as they stormed back with goals from Darnell Ferland, Kalan Ewald and Casey Mertens, the last with just 24 seconds remaining to force an extra period.

The Clydesdales killed off a key penalty in the extra time, and it remained scoreless for five minutes to require extra shooters. Chase Dobranski scored first for the Flyers, and Dan Smith was shut down on his attempt, but those results were reversed for the last four attempts, as Galen Matyjanka and Ferland failed to put another home, Eckman scored the tying goal for Duluth and Paine scored the winner as the anchor man.

Jeff Dunaisky gets the win for the Clydes stopping 27 of 31 shots. Jayme Brattengeier saved 26 of 30, taking the loss for the Flyers.

The win breaks a tie in the Superior International Junior Hockey League, as Duluth claims fifth place to themselves, pushing Sioux Lookout a point behind and into last place. The Flyers continue their U.S. swing with a game Saturday night in Spooner with the Wisconsin Wilderness. Duluth has three days off until they face the Dryden Ice Dogs Tuesday night in Proctor.
