For the third consecutive year, the Esko girls track & field team won the True Team title at the Section 7A meet held Tuesday in Pillager. The Eskomo girls won the event by over 100 points.

True Team is an event where each school is allowed two athletes per event. Each event’s score is determined by the amount of contestants in that event, with points awarded to every finisher top to bottom. Example: If an event has 30 total competitors, the first place finisher is awarded 30 points, while 30th place is awarded one point.

Esko led the field of 14 girls’ teams by scoring a team total 862 points, an amazing 114.5 points better than second place Staples-Motley. The depth of the Esko team was very apparent as they won without the services of sprinter Kelli Rengo and top thrower Haylee Goranson. Coach Tim Lindquist lauded the efforts of the fill in athletes. “Roz Chromy stepped up in the shot put with a first place effort and Kate Marquis stepped in to replace Goranson to record a 6th place finish. With Roz getting first, she scored 30 points and Kate got us 24 points with that shot put effort.”

Because of illness Goranson could not compete so an emergency search for a replacement disc thrower was launched. Lindquist commented to NSO, “Alyson Glumac got a quick lesson and earned the team 8 points for her effort; she now is interested in learning more about the event.”

Esko will now compete in the True Team state event on Saturday May 16 at Stillwater.

The other local team competing on the girl’s side was Cromwell, who finished in 13th place with a score of 321.5 points.

In boys competition, the Esko boys finished second to Pierz. Esko tallied 638 points to Pierz’s 725.5 points. Cromwell came in eighth with 411.5 total points.
