Max Reinertsen ran for seven touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Esko Eskomos to a 63-49 road victory over Deer River in a football game that created a box score more akin to a basketball contest.

In a game that saw a total of 112 points scored, Deer River opened the scoring first and built a 15 point 1st quarter lead. That was before Reinertsen went to work, scoring his first of seven touchdowns from 5 yards out. Like a couple of heavy weights trading punches, the two teams traded touchdowns with Deer River scoring just before the half to take a 27-21 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter saw the scoring barrage continue with the Eskomos and Warriors each putting 14 additional points on the board, creating a 41-35 Deer River lead after three quarters.

The Fourth quarter was all Reinertsen as he ran for three touchdowns, the longest of which was a 53 yarder to turn back a late challenge by Deer River. Kory Kolkin also added a five yard td run in a fourth quarter that saw the Eskomos put 28 points on the board.

It is hard to say defense was a big part of the game when 112 points are on the scoreboard, but the Eskomo defense came up big when they needed to. With time winding down and leading by just eight points at the time, the Eskomos turned back a fourth down attempt by Deer River at Deer River’s 18 yd line. The good field position was converted into a touchdown to help outpace the Warriors in the scoring marathon.

When the dust settled Reinertsen had scored seven rushing touchdowns, including two from 53 yards out, passed for another, ran for two and passed for two 2-point conversions to figure into 56 of Esko’s 63 total points. All in all, Reinertsen racked up 283 rushing and 145 passing yards on the night. Esko finished the night with 575 total team yards.

Almost lost in the shuffle was Damon Benham, the Deer River running back who had a great night, scoring five rushing touchdowns of his own in the losing effort. Deer River totaled 423 yards of total offense on the evening.

The Eskomos will barely have time to ice their calf muscles after the football game turned track meet against Deer River. In a quick turnaround, they will host Rush City in Thursday night game at Les Knuti field in Esko.
