ML-WR Runs Past Deer River

The Moose Lake-Willow River football team continued to show their impressive domination of section 7AA football as the Rebels cruised to a 47-0 win over Deer River at Willow River Friday night. The Rebels ran the ball thirty-five times for 387 yards in the section win at home. They exploded for three touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back as the Rebels post their third shutout of the season.

Chris Gassert got the Rebels on the scoreboard first with a 13 yard touchdown run. Michael Bennett kicked the extra point and the Rebels led 7-0. Cody Schmidt added the second touchdown of the quarter as he scored on a 21 yard run and with the Bennett kick the Rebels led 14-0. Gassert scored on a 21 yard run as the Rebels closed out the first quarter leading 21-0.

The second quarter saw Rebel quarterback Nick Tokar connect twice for touchdown passes; the first was a 30 yard pass to Trevor Nummela, and the second was a 1 yard pass to Tyler Huso. Tokar finished 7-10 passing on the night for 88 yards. Bennett added both extra points and it was a Rebel 35-0 lead at halftime.

Jake Disterhaupt had two touchdowns runs in the second half, the first touchdown run in the third quarter was a 15 yard run, and the second a 60 yard run in the fourth to close out the Rebels scoring on the night.

The Rebel defense continued to capitalize on mistakes as Deer River had two turnovers including an interception by Josh Cisar and a fumble recovery by Abe Young. Young along with Austin Lanoue led the team in tackles with 11 each and Young also finished with a quarterback sack. Taylor Mattison also recorded a sack for the Rebels.

The win moves the Rebels to 5-0 on the season and they will host the Two Harbor Agates next Friday in Willow River. The Warriors fall to 3-2 on the season and they will host section rival Esko next Friday night at home.
