Area Golfers Find Tough Going At Northern Invite

The Cloquet Boys Golf team found some tough going this past weekend at the Northern Invitational meet, which was held at the Quarry Golf course in Biwabik, Minnesota. The meet was held on Friday and Saturday in some difficult conditions, with wind gusting 25-30 miles per hour at times. The wind affected the 200 golfers that represented twenty teams.

The Cloquet Boys team finished 14th out of the 20 teams entered in the tournament. Esko/Carlton finished the meet in 18th place. International Falls won the team title by shooting a team total of 645. Hermantown was second with a score of 650. Grand Rapids was third with a 671, fourth place was Virginia with a 676, and Superior finished in fifth with a 685. The Lumberjacks team total was 726 and Esko/Carlton finished with a 769.

Glenn Walls of International Falls was the individual champion, shooting 76 the first day and 77 the second for a two day total of 153. Walls won the individual championship by five strokes. His teammate Travis Phillipe and Hermantown’s Andrew Oakes tied for second; they both shot 158. Oakes came back from an opening 82 with a 76 on Saturday to get to 158. Phillipe shot 78 the first day, 80 the second. Dan Bidle was fourth with a 161. Alex Kolquist was fifth with a 163.

Cloquet’s Andrew Castle shot 86-80 for a two day total of 166 to finish in a tie for tenth place with Riley Kolquist of Duluth Central and Clay Curwin of Shattuck-St.Mary’s. Two other Lumberjack golfers shot both days of the tournament. Jack McFarlane had a two-day total of 188 and Eric Fryc shot 197. Six Cloquet golfers shot once in the two-day tournament. Derek Schrecengost shot an 89 on Friday, Danny Nelson shot a 94, and Ryan Korby finished with a 99. Saturday golfers included Karl Palmquist who shot a 92, and both Evan Sheff and Dave McKinney, who
both shot a 98 to round out the Lumberjack scoring.
