Going into the season, one of the challenges for the Esko-Carlton girls soccer team was to find a way to replace the area’s leading scorer Amanda Bergstedt, whom the Eskomos lost to graduation. After Saturday’s game appears they should be able to put a pencil line through that item on their to-do list. Caitlyn Lilly scored a pure hat trick plus one to help the Eskomos to a 5-1 victory over Two Harbors.

Two Harbors got on the board first with Lacey Myrdal scoring in the 11th minute. From that point on it was all Esko with the Eskomos scoring five unanswered goals to claim the home victory. Lilly, who has the speed to put a ton of pressure on opposing defenses scored the next four goals which brought her total to a team leading 13 goals and four assists on the season.

The scoring barrage started in the 22nd minute when Lilly scored with Kate Shelerud assisting on the play to tie the score at one apiece. Both teams were able to keep the other off the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half and took the 1-1 tie into the locker room at half time.

The number 13 has been a source of luck for some and bad luck for others; on this day you can put Two Harbors in the latter column, because 13 minutes into the second half wearing jersey #13, Lilly struck again. This time it was on a header off of a corner kick by Hillary Anderson to give Esko-Carlton a 2-1 lead.

From there it was all downhill with the Eskomos scoring three goals in a span of seven minutes. Lilly scored in the 62nd minute with Shelerud picking up her second assist of the game and again in the 64th minute with an assist from Anderson. Anderson moved into the scoring column with a goal off her own corner kick in the 69th minute, giving her a goal and two assists on the day and the Eskomos a 5-1 home victory.

Rachel Ofstie 4 turned in four saves for the Eskomos while Lucy Bukowski finished the 8 saves for Two Harbors.

With the win Esko-Carlton moves to 6-0 in section play with an overall record of 6-2-1. The Eskomos will be back in action when the host section 7aa Duluth East under the lights at 7:00pm on Monday.
