Barnum Volleyball Off to a Slow Start

The Barnum Bomber volleyball team had great success last season making it to the section semi-finals for the first time in school history. This season the Bombers have gotten off to a slow start and Monday night the Bombers fell to the Panthers of Onamia at Onamia High School by a final score of 3-0.


The loss to Onamia dropped the Bombers overall record to 1-4. “It has been a tough start to the season,” Head Coach Corina Newman told Northland Sports Online. “We came out not focused tonight and we were not ready to play.” Newman added “it just wasn’t a good night for the girls.”


The Bombers fell Monday in three straight games 25-16, 25-15, and 25-23. Kelsey Wickstrom was 9-10 serving on the night, her teammates Karianna Duesler was 7-8, and Daron Mainville was 6-7 in the loss. Other bright spots were Duesler finishing with 14 set assists on the night, Jessica Newman added 9 kills and 11 digs on the night, teammate Courtney Hunter added 11 digs as well.


Barnum opened the season dropping its first two matches to Rush City and Cloquet before rebounding against Wrenshall for their lone win of the season. Barnum fell last Thursday to Braham and Monday’s loss drops the bomber to 1-4 overall. Barnum will be hosting a round robbing tournament this Saturday at Barnum High School.


Leaders early in this season include Jessica Newman leads the Bombers in kills with 30; Newman has also added 33 digs this season. Courtney Hunter has 28 digs overall, while Kelsey Wickstrom leads the Bombers in ace serves with 13, Newman has added 8.
