Duluth East Advances To Section Finals

The Duluth East Greyhounds and Grand Rapids Thunderhawks squared off in the Section 7AA boys semifinals on Saturday night. It would be the No. 1 seeded Greyhounds toppling the No. 4 seeded Thunderhawks are Amsoil Arena by a score of 5-2.

Grand Rapids would get on the scoreboard first when Mr. Hockey Finalist, Avery Peterson, hit the back of the net on a goal assisted by Ben Monley and Hunter Shepard, to give the Thunderhawks the early 1-0 advantage. Duluth East would answer right back when Ash Altmann and Ryan Peterson assisted Maysen Rust on a goal to tie it up 1-1. The Greyhounds didn’t stop there when they grabbed the 2-1 lead from a Jack Kolar goal assisted by Nick Altmann and Brian Bunten.

Duluth East would increase their lead again when Phil Beaulieu score on an unassisted goal at the 8 minute mark in the second period, giving the Greyhounds the 3-1 lead. In the third period, Duluth East’s Rust scored his second goal of the night giving them the 4-1 lead. That goal was assisted by Ryan Peterson and Alex Trapp. The Greyhounds had one more goal in them when Mitchell Mattson and Brendan Mark assisted Alex Adams on a laser to secure the 5-1 victory.

Grand Rapids goalie, Hunter Shepard, blocked 33 shot in the loss. Gunnar Howg stopped 15 for the Greyhounds.

The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks end their season with a 18-9 record. The Greyhounds improve to 20-6-1 and will play the Elk River/Zimmerman Elks (20-6) in the Section 7AA finals on February 27th at Amsoil Arena at 7:30 PM.
