Brielle Larson, just a sophomore, scored a pair of second period goals that helped propel the Proctor-Hermantown Mirage girls hockey team to the Section 7A championship over Hibbing-Chisholm on Friday night in Cloquet.  The Mirage may have won the game 5-3, but it was a tough, grinding match that saw the Blue Jackets fight till the final horn.

The only goal of a fast-paced first period was scored by the Mirage when Reilly Fawcett hammered in a shot with the lone assist going to Jillayne Gilbert as PH went up 1-0.
H/C scored at 5:43 of the second period on a shot by Val Gooden with an assist to Maddy Roberts and the game was tied at 1-1.  Enter Larson.  At 10:19 it was Larson scoring from Emma Olson as the Mirage went up 2-1.  The Mirage made it 3-1 when Larson scored again at 12:12 on an assist by Mikayla Kero.

Kero added a goal at 15:56 to make the score 4-1 for the MIrage, but Hibbing/Chisholm cut the lead to 4-2 with only 15 seconds remaining in the second period.  the goal came on the power play by Raini Heyblom.  Heyblom’s goal was the second power play goal of the game, in a game in which the Mirage went 3-for-3 with a man advantage.
A wild third period saw the Blue Jackets pull to within 4-3 when Mallorie Iazzo scored a power play goal at 10:17 to pull to within 4-3 and set the stage for a crazy finish.  That wild finish occurred when Sophie McGovern tossed a shot from neutral ice into the empty net of the Blue Jackets with 45 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Mirage a 5-3 insurmountable lead.

For the game the Mirage got a solid effort from goalie Kylie Hommerding who finished with 25 saves.  Hommerding was called on to make a pair of tough saves in the closing minutes of the affair when things were still in doubt prior to the goal by McGovern.  Meanwhile H/C goalie Megan Fridar also made 25 saves in the game.
PH are now 17-10 and will advance to play in the Minnesota State Class A Girls Hockey Tournament on Wednesday in St. Paul at the Xcel Energy Center.  The Mirage opponent will be St. Paul United on Wednesday night at 8pm.
