Molly Johnson had just enough steam left in her pitches to hang on and help her Floodwood Polar Bears pull out a 6-3 upset win over AlBrook on Tuesday night in the first round of the Section 7A girls softball tournament in Cloquet.

The Falcons, led by Alyssa Johnson, plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Eventually the Polar Bears, led by the swift running of Brea Vance, managed to tie the game at 2-2. AlBrook responded with a single tally in the fourth inning, but the wheels came off the wagon for the Falcons in the top of the sixth inning.

Floodwood scored four times in the top of the sixth on a pair of walks, a hit batter and three errors by the Falcons, all of which enabled the Polar Bears to grab a 6-3 lead.

Enter Johnson. The junior right hander from Floodwood slammed the door in the final two innings and the Polar Bears made some stellar defensive plays behind her to secure the victory.

Floodwood will now advance to Thursday’s quarterfinal round against top-ranked Cherry-Cotton in a 3pm game in Cloquet.
